Hi,

I am a 24-year-old german student and happily found an internship at a company in Melbourne. I already contacted the Australian Embassy in Berlin regarding my issue but need some advise from people outside the Australian Embassy

Since I already found an employer, the "Occupational Trainee Visa" should be the right thing to apply for. I was told that the procedure may last up to (8 - )12 weeks - unfortunately I don't have that much time.

So here is the point: Would it be possible to apply for a "Working Holiday Visa" (and receive it), then enter Australia without mentioning my employer? I don't want to get into trouble ...

- I found out that the "Working Holiday Visa" is supposed to be for travellers, who have not found an employer yet and plan on finding work while travelling. It's much easier and quicker to receive a WHV.

I would be thankful for any advise !

Hey,

Thank you for the quick reply. Well the idea to apply for the "Working Holiday Visa" (417) is of course an optionen, that I mentioned.

If there are any other advises I would be grateful !

Hi,
i had the 442 before and it took around 3-4 weeks altogether (time from nomination sent till visa approval). The biggest issue was the preparation of the nomination (task of your employer), but that was an internal company "hierarchy" and "we need 5 signatures" problem, not a immigration department problem.
how long is your internship going to be? when would you start?
I had the WHV before my occupational trainee visa but i probably wouldnt have "wasted" it for an internship anyway, i mean if you can get another visa for that. but thats depends on your personal situation/plans and how long your internship is of course.
Good luck!

Btw: Have you served in the army (even mandatory)? If yes, they want to see the military discharge paper. If that's not available anymore it can take a while to get a new one from the authorities.

It is not required for the 417.

Hi grusy

Who wants to see an army discharge paper? For what visa is it required for?

Thanks

Markus

Immigration

It's required for all visas except tourist classes (WHV not required if it was mandatory services like it is in Germany)

That's asked on all visa application forms:

served in a military force or state
sponsored/private militia, undergone any
military/paramilitary training, or been
trained in weapons/explosives use
(however described)?

Hey guys, thank you for your posts

@grusy:

I did civil service instead of military service and have papers available, but thank you for the advise!

@ emilotti:

well I don't have an employment contract with a concret period yet, but that's just a matter of time. The internship might start in October already, that's why I am kind of in a hurry, trying to figure out what visa to apply for ...

If it's up to me I would stay 6 months ... but I will have to see, what the employer says.

You telling me that it took you about 3-4 weeks to get everything done -regarging the 442 Visa- cheers me up again ... but maybe that was just the case, because you have already received a visa before (?).

---

Anyways ... I just got home from the Australian Embassy in Berlin and this one lady at the visa counter told me (with a wink) that it is up to me if I want to apply for a working holiday visa ... of course it is possible and saves a lot of paper work and time.

But as mentioned before by emilotti it could be a "waste" of the WHV. Of course later you can apply for a 2nd WHV if you want to travel to Australia again, but not if you can't meet the requirements for your 1st WHV (e.g. having worked here and there ...). That's at least what the lady at the visa counter said.

---

If there are any more advises ... then let me know

Sounds like they changed the WHV, back then (2005) there was only one WHV for everyone and no option for a second.
If you think your employer is reliable (and keen to have you there) or they have employed interns from overseas before (means they have the experience of getting the visa applications done/being a sponsor), i would try and get the 442 visa. You can find every step here: IMMI 442 visa

If you think your employer (or the HR department there) is not sure what to do, you can get a list of documents and the forms/website link together for them where they have to lodge the nomination and what papers are required - basically guide them what to do.

If this seems to hard to get all documents together in time, yeah, then maybe go for the WHV as the easy way around.
Good luck!

You can get a second WHV if you have worked for at least 3 months in regional Australia in some specified jobs.
